In these tests, a scaled – down model of a ship is constructed. By towing the model by a carriage along a towing tank, at various speeds, the towing forces can be measured by a dynamometer. Using dimensional analysis together with Froude theory, the corresponding forces for real size ship at various speeds can be estimated.
This test is called a resistance test. It is basically used to design the hull of vessels or to calculate the power required for engine of the vessel.
